Es en el cómo se utilizan y en la carga subjetiva que se les da a tener uno o no y a la utilidad que puedan significarte.  Los gadgets más vendidos del 2011 dan una muestra de esto, pero tampoco se puede decir que los más vendidos deben su suerte a la promoción publicitaria o a los engaños, sino que tienen sus razones técnicas y eso es lo que intentamos repasar en este listado –siempre aproximado y sin ninguna intención de ser definitivo ni dogmático- de cuáles son, hasta ahora,los mejores gadget de 2011.

   

  Motorola XOOM

  A Motorola Xoom la venimos siguiendo desde que salió a la arena del sangriento coliseo desde un particular vídeo de presentación. Como dijimos en aquel momento, Motorola Xoom se alió con Honeycomb para combatir al iPad 2 con un hardware que volaba sombreros. Nvidia Tegra 2 de 1 Ghz, 1080p con HDMI y el desafío de tener a Android 3.0 haciendo que todo se conecte de la mejor forma. El éxito estuvo garantizado por dos meses, pero luego de la salida de iPad 2 y ante los altos precios y un Honeycomb que todavía estaba en pañales, la XOOM no mostró números positivos en sus ventas. Sin embargo, quedó en este listado siendo una de las tablets más osadas y de mejor rendimiento que intentó competir palmo a palmo al iPad 2.

  Nintendo 3DS

  Consola portátil 3D que no requiere gafas. Con eso un puesto alto se justificaba solo, sin embargo el efecto 3D requiere de estar frente a frente con la consola y no moverla, algo que –hilando fino- se contradice con el concepto de portátil. Por otra parte la batería recargable de la Nintendo 3DS no fue de las mejores posibles, pero todo esto se balanceó al demostrar un fuerte poder de procesamiento de sonido y vídeo, un sistema para jugar online renovado, más seguro y social, una gran cantidad de juegos que incluyen nuevos y clásicos con gráficos impensados para una consola portátil y por último, un precio alcanzable para quien ahorre un poco.

  ElectroHub: Cargador universal de dispositivos

  Lo que si yo escribiera el futuro pondría en cada hogar del mundo: un cargador universal de dispositivos. La forma primigenia de presentarse ante el mundo es Electro Hub, y está destinada a cargar casi todos los dispositivos electrónicos que existen en el mercado de los gadgets utilizando baterías propias AA o AAA. Con capacidad para recargar hasta 6 dispositivos distintos con meramente apoyarlos sobre la superficie del ElectroHub, este invento que apareció en el CES 2011 y que recupera las bases sentadas por el pionero Powermat, tiene unas medidas que lo hacen un poco más grande que una Tablet convencional, un precio accesible de 40-50 dólares y una gran utilidad en tiempos donde se tienen 3 dispositivos cargables en cada hogar. Lo malo es que aunque ya está en el mercado, cuesta hallarlo.

  Xperia Play

  50 títulos diferentes para jugar tenía ya el Xperia Play cuando se presentó al público en Abril de este año, y desde ahí ya teníamos una pauta de que su pasar por la vida no sería ignorado. El móvil-consola de Sony trajo 4 pulgadas de pantalla, un chipset Adreno 204, un procesador de 1 Ghz y controles físicos para juegos como FIFA 10 o incluso una gran cantidad de emuladores de N64, SNES, NES, GameBoy y hasta MegaDrive. 

  
  

  Las revisiones más exigentes le han dado buenos puntajes en general y esto es porque este gadget combina con mesura los juegos y las funciones de Smartphone, sin desbarrancarse de uno lado o del otro. El precio elevado lo mantiene a raya del consumo masivo y su carencia de salida HDMI le quita la posibilidad de aprovechar sus capacidades para jugar en un monitor hogareño, además de tener una experiencia media extraña al usar sus controles analógicos. Por lo esperado y por las respuestas, uno de los mejores gadgets del 2011 sin dudas.

  Motorola Atrix 4G

  Como queriendo dejar bien demarcadas las capacidades propias en su historia pre-Google, Motorola presentó el Motorola Atrix 4G un móvil inteligente que mostró que un hardware fuerte puede ir de la mano de un móvil económico. Procesador dual-core de 1 GHz, pantalla de 4 pulgadas con resolución de 960 x 540, lector de huellas digitales y la impresionante qHD display que deja al Retina display mordiendo el polvo. Claro que también tiene contras fuertes, y una de ellas es la de no correr Android 2.3 por defecto. Pero lo que hizo blasfemar a la industria fue su pobremente ejecutado concepto para convertir el Atrix en un webtop. Sobre eso, la incomodidad fue lo que más puntos le bajó.

  Del iPad y de todo lo que su existencia inspira se pueden decir mil millones de cosas, pero nada le va a quitar a la tableta de Apple ser la líder del mercado de las mismas y tener colgada en su pared la plaqueta de pionera (a larga escala) y de “más linda”. Incluso antes de su lanzamiento,  la iPad 2 se vendió como agua en el desierto, sin embargo la opinión generalizada de las revisiones independientes se movió con frases como “es un iPad actualizada” o “un iPad con doble núcleo y dos cámaras.” La sensación que queda –y esto es opinión personal- es que Apple aprovechó el fetichismo que provoca su marca y sacó un producto de manera temprana que, con unos meses más de elaboración, podía haber sido una maravilla por lo que significa la actualización a iOS 4.3, un procesador y chip mejorado, Facetime con doble cámara y otras ventajas inexpugnables.

  Asus Eee pad transformer

  Las tablets fueron furor, y en el año también vimos el intento de ASUS por acercarse a este tipo de ordenadores portátiles. Uno de sus más celebrados fue el Asus Eee Pad Transformer, una tableta con Android Honeycomb de Asus con similitudes de hardware a la Motorola XOOM o a la Galaxy Tab. La sorpresa fue que este modelo venía con la posibilidad de convertirse en una laptop más eficiente adosándole un complemento de teclado y trackpad físico especialmente diseñado para esta tableta. La diferencia con los modelos de docks o puertos de expansión presentados en otras tabletas es que el del Asus Eee Pad Transforme tiene 2 puertos USB extra para la Tablet y además le agrega 6.5 horas de autonomía al dispositivo, convirtiendo tu Tablet de 9.5 horas de autonomía en una laptop de 16 horas. El costo ronda los 350-400 dólares, y la creemos mejor competidor que XOOM ante iPad2 por su acotado precio y similares prestaciones.

  Los smartphones

  No nos podíamos decidir por uno porque sería dejar a otros afuera que eran igual de importantes, entonces dijimos ¡Aquí mandamos nosotros! y pusimos dos. En primer lugar, tenemos al Samsumg Galaxy S2, con dos núcleos y pantalla AMOLED que se mostró en el MWC de Barcelona. El LG Optimus 3D también movió billeteras por adelantado con dos cámaras, doble procesador de Texas Instruments, 12 GB de RAM dividida en dos canales y 3D sin gafas como parte de sus sorpresas. Otros mencionables son el HTC Thunderbolt de Verizon que tiene una potencia al descargar que da miedo y bueno, el iPhone 4 blanco que vendió y mucho.

  Menciones especiales y lo que viene:

  El televisor inteligente de LG recibiendo novedades comienza las menciones especiales dentro de los mejores gadgets del 2011. Asimismo se continúa con el híbrido entre ratón y escáner de LG también. Los avances en Kinect, las ultrabooks, ChromeBook (que debería estar en el listado superior), el transPhone y muchos otros.
  
  El último párrafo se lo dedicamos a lo que viene supuestamente antes de que 2011 llegue a su fin. Entre lo más esperado están los productos de la compañía de Cupertino, siendo el primero y principal el iPhone 5, el cual se espera para Octubre. También se esperan novedades sobre el nuevo Apple TV e iPad 3, aunque no creemos que se sepa mucho más sobre el segundo hasta entrado el 2012. Por el lado de Microsoft se espera Xbox 720. También quedamos entusiasmados con el dispositivo para TV 3D personal que mostró Sony (y Lisandro) esta mañana. También el Wacom Inckling pinta bien (nunca mejor dicho).

Cuando entramos a Facebook, muchos venimos de otras realidades, de otras redes sociales sería válido también afirmar. • Poner las fotos de tu perfil concatenadas formando una sola imagen .
• Ser el primero “Me gusta” a tus propias actualizaciones. Luego nadie más puede que lo haga.
• Poner fotos de actrices, de actores, de partes de tu cuerpo, en tu foto de perfil de Facebook.
• Mandar mensajes o chats a tus amigos pidiéndoles que den “Me gusta” a tus fotos o actualizaciones.
• Instalar scripts, mayormente virus, que permiten saber quiénes visitaron tu perfil (a lo hi5).
• Dejar cadenas o frases copiadas en los muros de tus amigos para que las repliquen en su red.

Los smartphones son herramientas maravillosas, gadgets que nos facilitan el día a día y que nos permiten estar conectados y sacarles utilidad en múltiples ocasiones y situaciones. A la hora de elegir uno, las opciones son múltiples y variadas, desde Apple con sus dispositivos iOS a Android pasando por Windows Phone 7, WebOS, Blackberry o Symbian en Nokia. Todos ellos tienen sus ventajas y sus desventajas, pero precisamente entre las cosas en contra encontramos un denominador común, un gran talón de Aquiles: la duración de su batería.

Aunque ha ido mejorando mucho y es un tema en el que los fabricantes cada vez parecen poner más y más esfuerzo, para mí la característica en la que fallan todos, absolutamente todos los smartphones es precisamente en esa: en la duración de la batería. En algunos es más acusada y en otros menos pero un buen conocimiento del funcionamiento del sistema y de unos cuantos trucos para alargar lo máximo la duración de la misma nos pueden sacar más de una vez de algún apuro. Cuántas veces me habrá ocurrido que estoy esperando una llamada importante y tengo que dejar de usar el teléfono porque voy observando como la carga del teléfono va bajando implacablemente, aquí van una serie de consejos que pueden ayudarte a que tu teléfono se mantenga alejado del cargador lo máximo posible:

• Bajar el brillo de la pantalla: Esta es evidente, pero es que el elemento que más consume batería es la pantalla y lo hace a lo grande además, los usuarios de Android echadle un vistazo al uso de la misma en Ajustes>Información y veréis el alto porcentaje de consumo que se lleva. Así que lo mejor en caso de necesidad es bajarla y aún estando en condiciones normales tener en cuenta que aunque luzca mejor, si llevamos nuestra pantalla con el brillo al máximo la batería nos va a durar mucho menos. La gran pega de esta medida es que en exteriores, cuando la luz del sol impacta directamente con las pantallas actuales solemos necesitar el máximo brillo que pueda darnos, pero en interiores con luces suaves normalmente podemos tenerla incluso al mínimo posible.

• Cortar las conexiones: Vamos con una también un tanto obvia. Un smartphone es una máquina que permanentemente está realizando conexiones, algunas de ellas en segundo plano, según el sistema operativo móvil en el que nos encontremos podemos restringir o no esas conexiones de manera un tanto específica, pero quizá lo más fácil si nos vemos en una situación de necesidad es tirar por la vía de en medio y poner el teléfono en modo avión, ni llamadas, ni 3G, ni WiFi ni nada de nada, cuando toque usarlo de verdad quitamos el modo avión y seguro que apreciamos esa carga extra por no haber tenido conexiones. Otras opcinoes más suaves pasan por desconectar el 3G sólo, o 3G y WiFi, pero es algo que paso a detallar mejor en el siguiente punto.

• Gasta más 3G que WiFi: Es una duda bastante frecuente y sobre en la que en algunos puntos no hay unanimidad, pero en general es cierto que gasta bastante más el 3G que el WiFi, sobre todo en las condiciones de baja cobertura, como detallo más adelante. Muchas veces nos podemos encontrar apurados de carga de batería restante y con la necesidad de consultar algo en Internet y no sabemos qué protocolo nos gastará menos, si el WiFi o el 3G. En general, y aquí ya es desde la experiencia, con WiFi se suelen conseguir mejores resultados, sobre todo has que tener…

• Cuidado con la cobertura: Pero que muchísimo cuidado, en situaciones de baja cobertura el teléfono tiene que hacer un esfuerzo extra para realizar las funciones de conectividad, esfuerzo que se ve evidentemente reflejado en la duración de la batería. Sin encima estamos usando 3G y en situaciones de mala señal, si la actividad se prolonga empezaremos a notar como la batería va bajando a ojos vista. Así que en resumen entre este punto y el anterior el 3G, el EDGE o el Gprs evitarlo en favor del WiFi cuando sea posible y teniendo en cuenta que a peor cobertura, menos durará nuestra batería.

• Aplicaciones en segundo plano: Una de las cosas que me parecen más brillantes de iOS, aunque no tenga multitarea ‘real’ como muchos no se cansan de criticar es que administra este aspecto mucho más sabiamente. Una aplicación ejecutándose en segundo plano es una aplicación que le está quitando vida útil de carga a tu querido smartphone, así de simple. Por eso cuantas menos estén ejecutándose a la vez mejor, pero es que además suele ser interesante tener ir cerrando procesos cuando sea necesario, en el caso de Android mi gestor de tareas favorito es Advanced Task Killer, aunque hay muchos y algunos también muy buenos, en iOS podemos eliminar aplicaciones abiertas con doble clic en el botón Home y cuando nos aparezca la lista de aplicaciones manteniendo pulsado hasta que empiecen a tililar con un icono en la esquina superior izquierda, que tras pulsarlo cierra la app en cuestión.

• Conocer qué características consumen más energía: Si estás bajo de batería y se te ocurre utilizar el flash de tu iPhone 4 como linterna mal vamos, porque te la vas a acabar en unos minutos. Del mismo modo que con el 3G hay ciertas funcionalidades de nuestro teléfono que consumen mucha más batería que el simple uso cotidiano, algunas de esas son el personal hotspot para dar WiFi que incorporan muchos teléfonos, grabar vídeos en HD, la reproducción de archivos, las aplicaciones que requieren geolocalización constante como los GPS del coche o las aplicaciones de redes sociales que continuamente están haciendo llamadas de datos y enviándolos, como Whatsapp. Lo mejor en estos casos es evitarlas y usarlas sólo si es imprescindible.

• Cuidado con los sobrecalentamientos: Lo peor que le sienta a tu batería, y aquí hablamos también en términos de longevidad y vida útil, es estar en estado permanente de calentamiento, esto puede ocurrir si dejamos el dispositivo por un descuido al sol o si hacemos uso de muchas aplicaciones que pongan el procesador al máximo y notemos la carcasa calentita. Siempre hasta cierto límite, obviamente no hablamos de temperaturas bajo cero, pero en general el fresquito es lo que mejor le sienta a tu querida batería.

• Utiliza una funda con batería extra: Pasamos ya a una serie de consejos y utilidades más pragmáticos. Si andas siempre apurado de batería porque eres un heavy user y te pasas el día fuera sin la posibilidad de acercarte a un enchufe, entonces probablemente quieras plantearte comprar algunas de estas carcasas externas que llevan además acoplada una batería extra. Recuerdo que en los primeros tiempos eran muy aparatosas, pero ahora hay algunas que realmente no aportan tanto grosor extra al teléfono (aunque algo siempre es inevitable) y que suponen a efectos prácticos como llevar otra batería a cuestas, duplicando el tiempo de uso.

• Compra una batería e intercámbiala: En el iPhone no se puede porque no se puede cambiar la batería, pero en casi todos los demás fabricantes ¿Por qué no? Puede salir incluso mejor que una funda con batería, si vas siempre con la duración ajustada comprate una extra, la mayoría son finas y no abultan mucho en el bolsillo y cuando se acabe la recambias. Simple y efectivo.

• Un adaptador para el coche: Es un gran invento, y cuando hacemos viajes largos nos permiten conectar el GPS del teléfono y no quedarnos sin batería, en DealExtreme (envíos gratuitos a todo el mundo) tienen algunos baratísimos por poco más de un dólar. Simplemente lo conectamos al mechero, enchufamos el cable USB y listo, teléfono funcionando y encima cargándose.

Esta es una modesta recopilación de algunos trucos que como heavy user que soy me son de gran ayuda, pero seguro que me dejo alguno en el tintero, no dudéis en dejarlos en los comentarios.

Siendo honestos, podríamos crear varios Top 10 listando a esta clase de gadgets. En esencia, desde que los puertos USB están entre nosotros, prácticamente no ha habido límites en la creatividad, el ingenio, y por qué no el absurdo de algunos diseñadores a la hora de lanzar productos al mercado. Teclados, ratones y pendrives encabezan esta legión de accesorios, pero en la siguiente lista podrás encontrar algunos ejemplares bastante inusuales de ver funcionando junto a un ordenador.

En estos momentos lo único que tengo a la mano con interfaz USB es un ratón, un adaptador de tarjetas SD, y una pequeña luz para mi netbook. Los primeros dos suenan completamente razonables, ya que caen dentro del “uso original” pactado para el puerto USB. En cambio, la luz USB se sale un poco de esa categoría. Concedido, los puertos USB pueden ofrecer una cierta alimentación para dispositivos externos, pero este simple detalle ha generado un torrente sin fin de extraños accesorios con formas y funciones muy variadas. Básicamente, todo lo que requiera de una fuente relativamente baja de energía puede ser adaptado para su alimentación vía USB, y en algunos casos, hasta esa regla termina siendo rota. Por supuesto, los puertos USB no son la única razón por la cual diseñadores doblan algunas ideas un poco más de la cuenta con el objetivo de lanzar un producto único, pero se encuentra entre las principales. Dicho eso, hoy compartiremos con nuestros lectores una humilde lista de accesorios para ordenador, que en algunos casos su única vinculación con el mismo es recibir energía y nada más.

10: Refrigerador/calentador de bebidas

Comenzamos por todo un clásico. Largas horas frente al ordenador, y la necesidad de beber algo, ya sea frío o caliente. ¿La solución? Nada mejor que un dispositivo dedicado para mantener las gaseosas frías y las infusiones calientes, probablemente haciendo uso de la magia que aporta el llamado efecto termoeléctrico. Sólo necesita de un puerto USB, y podrás encontrar variantes a través de toda la Web.

9: Combimouse

Los ordenadores portátiles han combinado durante años teclado y ratón en un espacio común, pero con el Combimouse, una idea similar llega a los sistemas de escritorio. Básicamente, la sección derecha del teclado “es” el ratón, mientras que el “scroll” se encuentra en la parte izquierda. La fase de prototipo parece superada, y actualmente están buscando inversores para llevar a este gadget al público.

8: “Bombilla” USB

Que no pase desapercibido: Lo retro está ganando cada vez más fuerza, y la informática no es inmune a esto. Mientras que el mundo entero está buscando la forma de reducir la presencia de las clásicas lámparas incandescentes, alguien ya tuvo la idea de tomar su diseño característico y colocarlo en la punta de una luz USB. Imaginamos que no debe utilizar filamento, de lo contrario devoraría baterías...

7: Lanzamisiles USB

¿Quién dijo que las guerras de cubículos no podían volverse sofisticadas? Los papeles se convierten en un proyectil obsoleto con uno de estos lanzamisiles USB sobre el escritorio. Con un alcance de seis metros, el lanzamisiles puede arrojar muerte plástica a 360 grados, con un ángulo vertical máximo de 45 grados para quienes necesitan más precisión. Incluso ya hay versiones que incorporan una mira láser.

6: Pendrive LEGO USB

Los ladrillos LEGO han mantenido una estrecha relación con la informática, tal vez porque fueron la primera forma en la que muchos “geeks” lograron desarrollar sus habilidades. Los ladrillos son utilizados en infinidad de proyectos, desde modificaciones para pendrives hasta carcasas enteras, sin embargo, este pendrive es “oficial”. Puede que 2 GB no representen mucho en estos días... pero es un LEGO.

5: Teclado virtual láser

Hemos escuchado de este gadget durante mucho tiempo, y desde múltiples fuentes. La idea es más que interesante: Proyectar un teclado láser sobre una superficie. Obviamente, no todas las superficies son compatibles, y ciertamente deberá requerir algo de práctica. Parecía que el diseño iba a quedar enterrado por cuestiones de patente, pero la gente de Celluon lo lanzó al mercado a un promedio de 120€.

4: Ratón Mus3

Su generación previa había sido presentada en los medios especializados hace algunos años, pero su nueva versión sigue siendo igual de interesante. El ratón Mus3 rompe algunos esquemas relacionados con el diseño de ratones, y aplica una vuelta de tuerca al recibir la forma de nada menos que un cursor. De acuerdo a su diseñador es perfectamente cómodo para el usuario, además de atractivo a la vista.

3: Parrilla USB

Así son los deportes: Muhammad Alí se perpetuó como uno de los boxeadores más grandes de la historia, y George Foreman hizo una fortuna usando su nombre para vender parrillas por televisión. Una de ellas es la iGrill, y como su nombre sugiere, utiliza un conector USB como fuente de energía. Tan fácil de usar, que el software se encarga de controlar hasta el grado de cocción de los alimentos... Quiero una hamburguesa.

2: Vibrador USB

Aquí tenemos... esto se usa para... bien, imagino que se pueden dar una muy buena idea de para qué se usa. De acuerdo al sitio australiano que dice venderlo en línea, el vibrador trae diez “ritmos” preprogramados, y cinco “accesorios” de látex intercambiables. En ciertos casos, el único límite para este dispositivo sería la batería de la portátil a la que se lo conecte, pero si se usa un sistema de escritorio, bueno...

1: Pet Rock USB

Damas y caballeros, esto lo supera a casi todo. A mediados de los ‘70, un sujeto en California tuvo esta idea de vender rocas como si fueran mascotas. La “novedad” duró apenas seis meses, tiempo suficiente para convertirlo en millonario. Ahora, la “Roca Mascota” o “Pet Rock” regresa, ¡pero con un cable USB! Conecta la piedra al puerto USB, y olvídate de todo. Es una mascota tan resistente, que no consume energía...
