Green Lantern , one of the oldest and most enduring heroes of DC Comics , will return back to the forefront in the world of comics, this time as a superhero proud, courageous and openly homosexual.
The change, which was recently suggested by the company without telling the character's name will be revealed next week in the pages of the second issue of "Earth 2" and comes on what has been a year of expansion for gay characters in the pages of comics.
Supporters purists will note that Green Lantern is not the "galactic police" it was-and is part of the Justice League, with a rich history of triumphs and tragedies.
Instead, says James Robinson, who writes the new series, Alan Scott is a worked version of the classic Green Lantern which first appeared in the pages of the No. 16 "All-American Comics," published in July 1940.
The fact that is homosexual is not part of a wider plot that seeks to be exploited in the way. "That was my idea," said Robinson, saying that rather than return to DC to release all their titles last year, Alan Scott had a son who was gay.

Some groups have protested the inclusion of gay characters, but Robinson does not lose enthusiasm, ensuring that he is gay is just one facet of Scott. "This guy is a media mogul, a hero, with a dynamic personality ... and is gay," said Robinson. "It's a complex character," he said.
