Como pueden ver, tuve la oportunidad de probar el Samsung Smart TV (específicamente, el UN55D8000, el modelo de 55″). Como comentaba en artículos anteriores, todo esto de televisores “inteligentes” no me parecía más que otro término marketero que las empresas estaban intentando utilizar para vendernos nuevos televisores. Después del todo, toda la onda del 3D ya suena demasiado 2010, no?

Tras pasar poco más de dos semanas con el Smart TV, debo decir que la idea de tener un televisor conectado frente a la TV no sólo resultó ser sumamente interesante, sino que creo que ofrecen beneficios mucho más importantes que toda la moda del 3D.

Los Smart TVs, también llamadas connected TVs, ofrecen una principal ventaja frente a los convencionales: están conectados a internet permanentemente. Esto, junto con aplicaciones desarrolladas para los televisores, nos ofrecen un mundo de nuevas posibilidades que antes eran inexistentes.

Podemos, por ejemplo, navegar la web mientras esperamos a que nuestro show regrese de comerciales. Podemos abrir Twitter o Facebook y comentar lo que estamos viendo, en tiempo real. Y en un futuro, podremos alquilar, o incluso comprar películas con estos televisores.

Cómo es el control?

Este es el tema que más me preocupaba y, en efecto, con el control por defecto del televisor, navegar en páginas web es realmente incómodo. Tratar de escribir la dirección de una página, por ejemplo, o realizar una búsqueda en YouTube, o peor aún, escribir un Tweet, es realmente una prueba de paciencia. Nunca 140 caracteres parecieron tantos.

Sin embargo, esto puede remediarse de dos maneras: comprar un control remoto que incluye un teclado QWERTY (que soluciona bastante bien el problema) o mejor aún: utilizar un teléfono Android con la aplicación Remote de Samsung, que prácticamente convierte a nuestro smartphone en el control ideal. La idea de esta segunda opción no es nueva: ya hemos visto varios controles remotos para PCs. Pero ver una del mismo fabricante para el televisor en el Android Market es una verdadera ayuda, y hace que toda la experiencia sea sublime, comparada a utilizar el control remoto que viene por defecto. Si hay algo que mejorar en los modelos del 2011, es este tema: ojalá que para el 2012, cuando nuevamente veamos una renovación de TVs, el control con teclado QWERTY sea algo standard para todos los Smart TVs.

Mouse? No es necesario. Las aplicaciones, como veremos más adelante, funcionan sumamente bien con el limitado control que nos ofrece uno de TV. Es cuando tenemos que ingresar texto, donde llegamos a un problema. A menos que el reconocimiento de voz mejore considerablemente (aunque la nueva interfaz de Kinect de Microsoft a lanzarse estos meses parece ser un paso correcto en esta dirección: casi todo lo controlamos por voz), un teclado QWERTY pequeño para pulgares sigue siendo una excelente alternativa. Alternativa, que debería ser el control por defecto.

Qué tal el 3D / Calidad de imagen?

El 3D funcionó bastante bien. No soy muy fan de la tecnología (hasta ahora sólo he visto dos películas que me han impresionado con el uso de 3D: Avatar y How To Train Your Dragon), pero algo que sí me agrada de la idea es que, para poder mostrar 3D, la calidad de los componentes del televisor deben ser bastante altos. Y esto es lo que claramente se nota con el Smart TV: tenemos una excelente calidad de imagen, con colores vibrantes, colores oscuros que se ven oscuros, y en general, un verdadero espectáculo para nuestros ojos.

Los lentes 3D han mejorado bastante en los últimos años: todavía no son muy fashion, pero sí son cada vez más livianos: los incluidos con el Smart TV eran casi imperceptibles.

A lo que voy con esto es que, a pesar de ser llamado “Smart TV”, no significa que hayan dejado el resto de lado: el 3D funciona muy bien, y la calidad de imagen es excelente.

Pero como comentaba al inicio, es algo que ya hemos visto bastante en el pasado. Lo novedoso, por supuesto, es justamente cómo el televisor ahora puede cumplir la función de home theater PC, gracias a aplicaciones.

Y la calidad de las aplicaciones / interfaz?

Dejando este punto negativo del control (que fue, de lejos, el más molesto), debo decir que la experiencia en general fue buenísima.

Algo a lo que muchos no le prestamos atención cuando estamos en la tienda buscando TVs, es a la interfaz de usuario. Históricamente, esto ha sido terrible. Usualmente nos vemos obligados a realizar una enorme cantidad de clicks para cambiar de fuentes de video o audio. En mi caso, por ejemplo, tengo conectado el Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, y un Home Theater PC todo al Televisor. Para cambiar de fuente, tengo que presionar Menú, navegar hacia Input, luego seleccionar Source, elegir de la lista, y finalmente presionar Enter por cuarta vez. Claro, el control incluye un botón de “Source”, pero en lugar de traernos una lista, trata de saltarse de uno a otro, y usualmente cada salto puede tomar 2-3 segundos. Terrible.

Esto fue lo que me llamó bastante la atención del Menú del Smart TV. Es uno de los más intuitivos que he visto a la fecha. El botón de Source, por ejemplo, inteligentemente nos muestra una lista con todo lo que tenemos conectado en ese momento. Presionar el botón rápidamente avanza entre una y otra fuente de video sin saltar a la fuente, hasta que nos queamos ahí por unos segundos. Simple, pero un verdadero alivio.

Aplicaciones

En cuanto a las aplicaciones disponibles, pude probar YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Vimeo, además de unos cuantos juegos. No, no es un App Store de Apple o un Android Market – el número de aplicaciones es bastante limitado – pero las que están disponibles funcionan bastante bien. Me gustó bastante la de Twitter / Facebook, que mostraban un stream actualizado constantemente con lo que publicaban nuestros amigos. La de Vimeo también es excelente, quizás debido a que los videos en Vimeo tienen una excelente calidad (no se pierdan ver todos los time lapses y tilt shift videos disponibles). La velocidad de instalación varía bastante, de acuerdo al tamaño de la aplicación y nuestra calidad de conexión. Inicialmente tuve problemas de lentitud, pero una vez que acerqué el hotspot para tener una mejor señal WiFi, la velocidad aumentó considerablemente.

Son las aplicaciones las que verdaderamente me llamaron la atención, y razón por la cual podríamos considerar al televisor como “smart”. En el pasado, las TVs conectadas lo único que hacían, era incluir un navegador sencillo que eran prácticamente inútiles. Ahora, este Smart TV cuenta con alrededor de 40 aplicaciones disponibles (con la promesa de lanzar más) que demuestran el potencial de volver a la TV en nuestro centro de entretenimiento.

Y lee mis archivos MKV? MOV? AVI?

Sorprendentemente, el Smart TV leyó todo lo que le arrojé encima. MKVs a 1080p corrieron sin pausas ni problemas. Lo mismo con AVIs, MOVs, MP4s, WMVs. Incluso archivos SRT (los subtítulos) eran leídos por el equipo – siempre y cuando tuviesen el mismo nombre de video. No sé que procesador tenemos dentro del Smart TV para la decodificación, pero fue lo suficientemente capaz de trabajar con estos formatos comprimidos sin ningún problema.

Lo único que hice? Fue sacar mi disco duro externo de mi Home Theater PC, y conectarlo directamente al puerto USB del televisor. Luego lo seleccionamos como fuente de la lista, y en segundos, veremos una lista con todo lo que está disponible en el HD.

En resumen, un televisor que no sólo nos ofrece una excelente calidad de imagen, sino que realmente impresiona con las aplicaciones instalables, y las posibilidades que esta interconexión a internet brinda. El poder ver todos nuestros videos, sin importar el formato, desde un disco duro externo (o a través de la red via el protocolo DNLA) realmente demuestran lo que nos depara los próximos años: serán pocos los televisores que no cuenten justamente con las funciones mencionadas: acceso a aplicaciones, interconexión a la web, videoconferencia, y la posibilidad de tener un “hub” central de videos en casa, desde el cual esta TV puede jalar contenido.

Y todo esto, lo hace el Samsung Smart TV ahora. Con pequeños problemas (como el control, y algo de lentitud entre saltos de menú), pero mucho mejor, y mucho más de lo de lo que esperaba. Pensaba ver un navegador algo crudo pegado a un botón del control remoto. En lugar de ello? Tenemos un navegador bastante capaz (incluso trae soporte para Flash), pero aparte de esto, tenemos algo especial: aplicaciones creadas en torno a las fortalezas y ventajas de un televisor: adaptadas a un control diferente, porque, después de todo, con una TV no interactuamos igual que una PC. Este era el componente que siempre he sentido que ha faltado en la TV, y es algo que esta generación ha arreglado. Tras probar este y otros Smart TVs que han salido este año, algo me ha quedado bastante claro: éste es el futuro de las TVs.
